The iPhone 5 has a larger 4-inch retina display with one more row of icons on the main screen as compared to its predecessor iPhone 4S. The new iPhone has A6 chipset and 1.2 GHz processor which makes it the most advanced Smartphone available in the market so far. It uses iOS 6 operating system with 1 GB RAM and three different storage capacities. The front and back cameras of the iPhone have also been improved which enable the iPhone 5 users to capture High definition images and record 1080p videos with this innovative smartphone. In addition to these features and technical specifications, iPhone 5 has also come up with a greater support for millions of applications which are useful for both personal and business usage. The most popular and astonishing App is Siri. This is a feature which has artificial intelligence capabilities and can help the user in different decision making processes. This app is of great interest for the business professionals who have to schedule their day-to-day activities in an efficient manner so as to avoid overlapping or mismanagement. The final section of the report gives step-by-step recommendations to Mr. Brian Lewis on the purchase of iPhone 5 for his business use. The recommendations have been given in the light of major advantages which he can realize from this Smartphone in his professional life.

iPhone 5:

The iPhone 5 is the latest Smartphone in the iPhone series developed by Apple Inc. It is the sixth version of iPhone since the first iPhone 1G (2007); followed by iPhone 3G (2008), iPhone 3GS (2009), iPhone 4G (2010), and iPhone 4GS (2011). Apple launched its latest iPhone on 21st September, 2012. The iPhone 5 is the slimmest, lightest, and most innovative Smartphone ever. Apple has totally redesigned its new iPhone to meet the high expectations of its customers and the competitive challenges from the Smartphone industry. Due to its sleek and stylish design and advanced technical features, iPhone 5 has become the most liked Smartphone around the Globe. Apple recorded a total sale of around two million iPhone 5 units in the first 24 hours before its release and more than five million units in the first three days after its release (Apple, Inc.). The iPhone 5 has also been recognized as the most awaited Smartphone ever by international media agencies, IT companies, speculators, and business analysts. With the release of iPhone 5, Apple has entered into a new race of competitiveness with its Global rivals like Samsung, Nokia, HTC, and Sony.

The iPhone 5 Features and Specifications:

Before the release of iPhone 5, the speculators from the Global IT industry and the potential customers were largely exposed to rumors about its design, features, technology, and price. However, Apple had not officially announced any change in its new iPhone until September 12, 2012 in an event in San Francisco at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The new iPhone 5 is more innovative and advanced than its predecessor iPhone 4S in many different ways (Apple, Inc.). The following section gives a comprehensive overview of this interesting technological product by highlighting its main features including design, display, camera, memory, operating system, technical specifications, etc.

Design:

The new iPhone comes with an aluminum composite frame. The previous two versions were designed with a stainless steel frame which the former CEO, Mr. Steve Jobs (Late) thought was more stylish for this innovative Smartphone. However, the company received a number of complaints about scratches and losing of shine with the passage of time. Apple has now used aluminum frame in its iPhone 5 in order to overcome this drawback. The back of iPhone 5 is made up of highest quality anodized 6000 series aluminum. As far as the physical dimensions are concerned, the new iPhone takes 12% lesser volume than the previous version iPhone 4S. It is also 20% lighter and 18% thinner than iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 is 7.6 millimeters (0.30-inch) thin which makes it the slimmest Smartphone available in the market so far. Its weight is just 112 grams (3.95 ounces) which also makes it stand among the lightest Smartphones of its kind. Other design specifications of iPhone 5 are its height and weight which are 4.87 inches (123.8 mm) and 2.31 inches (58.6 mm) respectively. Due to its slimmer, lighter, and more attractive design, the iPhone 5 is greatly appreciated by its customers all over the world (Apple, Inc.).

Display:

This new version of iPhone has a 4-inch Retina display with a resolution of 1136 x 640. This display size is slightly larger than that of previous iPhone versions which have 3.5-inch Retina display with 960 x 640 Resolution. Like its predecessors, iPhone 5 is also available in two colors but with slight variation in color combinations: Black & Slate and White & Silver. The company has not increased the width of the phone which makes it convenient to use it with a single hand and makes it even more stylish than iPhone 4S and other models. All the previous versions of iPhone have four rows of icons on the main screen. However, the increased length of iPhone 5 has allowed the company to add one more row of icons beneath the four rows. This row gives more space to the contents and wider display for video playbacks (Apple, Inc.). The iPhone 5 has an LED-backlit IPS TFT Capacitive touch screen. The pixel density is 326 ppi with 16M colors. The multi-touch capability of this Smartphone has always been a competitive advantage for the company (Baig).

Camera:

Apple has always brought improvements in every upcoming model of its products. The camera included in every new iPhone version has been improved to meet the requirements of the customers. For example, the primary (back) camera has been upgraded from 2 Mega Pixels in the first two versions to an 8 Mega Pixel with 1080p video recording capability in the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 has come up with even more improved camera with sharper imaging and video recording (Beavis). It can capture images 40% faster than iPhone 4GS camera and is more efficient and sensitive in low-light environment. It can simultaneously record High Definition videos and capture HD images. Other features include touch focus, face detection, panorama, geo-tagging, HDR, video stabilization, and LED video light. The camera can capture videos with 30 frames per second refreshing capability. The front camera has also been improved from VGA in iPhone 4GS to 1.2 MP in iPhone 5. Although Apple has never provided a stunning front camera in its iPhones, but this improved 1.2 Mega Pixel camera in iPhone 5 is capable of video chat and recording HD 720p videos (Apple, Inc.).

Memory:

The RAM (Random Access Memory) of iPhone 5 is 1 GB which is double as compared to the iPhone 4S (with 512 MB). The iPhone 5 is available in three storage capacities: 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB (Apple, Inc.). However, there is no slot in the phone which can be used to extend this memory by using external memory cards. The users have to manage their storage requirements within this internal memory range of iPhone 5 (iMore).

Technical Features:

Operating System and Central Processing Unit (CPU):

The iPhone 5 runs iOS 6 which is the most advanced and the fastest operating system for Smartphones so far. The iPhone 5 has A6 chip which is almost double in speed than its previous version, A5 chip. This faster chipset makes everything faster in iPhone 5. The web-browsing, email attachment, application launching, and connectivity — each and every function which iPhone 5 can perform for its user is now much faster than before (Topolsky). The A6 chip along with 1.2 GHz Dual-Core ARM v7s CPU greatly helps in improving the overall performance of the phone. In addition to faster web-browsing, connectivity, and application launching, the increased CPU speed and faster A6 chip give better graphic performance and results (Geller).

Battery Time:

The faster running of applications and better graphical performance do not impact the time and life of battery in iPhone 5. This new iPhone uses a standard battery () which gives an estimated talk time of up to 8 hours on 3G and 2G networks. The standby time of the battery is up to 225 hours on both the networks. With its fully charged battery, the iPhone 5 can continuously play music up to 40 hours and videos up to 10 hours. Like previous iPhone versions, the battery in iPhone 5 is built-in, i.e. The users cannot replace it by themselves (iMore).

Audio and Sound:

The voice and video call sounds in iPhone 5 are perfectly crystal-clear which do not allow external noise distortions. The noise-canceling technology allows the iPhone set to reduce these external noise distortions up to the maximum possible extent. The iPhone 5 has a 3.5mm audio jack. In the development of its latest technological products, Apple has given special focus on improving the sound quality in both playback and telephonic conversation. It has also in an innovative design which is developed by keeping in view the shape of ears and the sound requirements on different pitches and environmental conditions (Apple, Inc.).

The new Lightning Connector:

The previous iPhones had a 30-pin connector which is now replaced with a lightning connector. This lightning connector is smarter, thinner, and more durable and stylish than the old connector. This new connector has an eight-signal and all-digital design which significantly increases its durability and performance (Apple, Inc.). Unlike the old connectors, the lightning connector is reversible, i.e. It can be inserted or plugged in the iPhone 5 in any direction. The users who want to upgrade their old iPhones with iPhone 5 can purchase an adopter from Apple which is capable of converting the old connector to the new lightning connector (iMore).

Comparison of iPhone 5 with previous versions:

If iPhone 5 is compared with all the previous versions, the most notable thing is the which Apple has brought in its Smartphones. First of all, looking at the CPU: the iPhone 1G and 3G were using ARM 1176JZ (F)-S CPU whereas the new iPhone uses 1.2 GHz Dual-Core ARM v7s CPU (Apple, Inc.). This increase in the processing speed allows the new iPhone to run multiple applications without getting overloaded or hacked. Similarly, the new iPhone has better camera, faster and the most advanced mobile operating system, faster RAM, longer battery life, faster Bluetooth device, and various other features which were missing in the previous versions (iMore). The following image depicts a comprehensive comparison among all iPhone versions:
